THE EARLY DAYS

Too young to have a history but old enough to have a past, the Manitoulin Power & Sail Squadron is proud of its achievements before and since the presentation of the Warrant to Commander-elect John P. Edward at a ceremony held on September 21, 1996 in Little Current.

That Manitoulin Island, Northern Ontario’s boating ground par excellence, was without a Canadian Power & Sail Squadron was mind-boggling. Some members of the Sudbury Power Squadron resolved to alter the situation. In September 1995, a Boating Course was held at the Manitoulin Secondary School in West Bay sponsored by the Sudbury Squadron. John P. Edward was the instructor and June, his wife, was proctor. Sixteen students graduated in Sudbury on May 10, 1996. They and other members of the Sudbury Squadron transferred to the Manitoulin Squadron when the Warrant was received. The original membership of 37 had increased to 66 by the time of the first annual general meeting in May, 1997.

The Squadron’s first Boating course (1996-1997) with 18 graduates was soon followed by a Piloting Course (1997) with 4 graduates. In the spring of 1997, The Squadron held a Boating course for the First Nation of Wikwemikong on its territory, apparently a first in Canada. Eighteen graduates joined the Squadron.

The membership level over the last 5 years has remained above the 100 mark.
